148Apps Game of the Year 2022

Posted by Campbell Bird on December 31st, 2022

2022 is almost over, and so now in the same fashion as last year, I wanted to model some Game of the Year awards through categories in addition to simply ranking my personal favorites. Between now and the dawn of 2023, I'll be updating this page regularly with new entries for each category, so make sure to check in and see what titles win which awards.

The Categories

For each of these categories, I'll choose a winner and mention some notable runner-ups. Any game nominated or chosen for any of these cateories is then eligible for the final category, Best Game, which is the culminating category where I will construct a ranked list of my favorite games from this year.

Apple Arcade: Ranked - Top 25 [Updated 7.6]

Posted by Campbell Bird on July 6th, 2022

In case you missed it, I am on a quest to rank every Apple Arcade game there is.

Over a year into the Apple Arcade experiment, I’m adjusting my approach to these rankings to make it a bit less cumbersome to update and read. For the most part, this means the number of updates on previously released games will decrease, and the text below each entry will be kept to a brief-yet-accurate justification for its positioning.

This has less to do with the pace of Apple Arcade releases and more to do with the fact that the general quality of games on the service simply isn’t what it should be. In the time that one release comes to the service, multiple high quality games hit the App Store that you don’t have to pay monthly upkeep for. Unless something drastic changes with the service, my opinion on it probably won’t change much. With the most recent update bringing older established titles to the service, Arcade is certainly the strongest it has ever been, but additional shakeups like this will need to keep happening to finally sell me on the service.

Anyway, on with the ranking updates:

The 5 Best Mobile Puzzle RPGs

Posted by Campbell Bird on June 24th, 2022

RPGs with puzzle mechanics feel like the perfect fit for mobile. There’s something about a game that moves at a gentile pace while having a somewhat predictable-yet-challenging set of mechanics that can morph as you progress through some kind of grand adventure that feels right at home in your pocket.

With the recent release of Hero Emblems II, I thought it’d be good to revisit some of the absolute best puzzle RPGs that iOS has to offer, just in case you missed out on some of these incredible titles.

The best mobile games like Diablo (but not Immortal)

Posted by Campbell Bird on June 17th, 2022

Diablo Immortal has now been out in the wild for some time now, and it’s basically more impressive as a game than I initially expected and more disappointing on the monetization front than anticipated. You can read a full review here, but the upshot is the game is a perfectly fine and highly polished way to do some Diablo-style grinding and the store—though shitty—can mostly be ignored.

If you don’t want to support or engage with free-to-play design and/or Activision Blizzard generally, first: I totally understand as there is no shortage of reasons for having these sentiments! And secondly: I have good news! There is a veritable bounty of games on the App Store that can deliver a very Diablo-like experience without a gross store or company attached to them. Check out our top picks below.

The 5 Best Mobile Battle Royale Games

Posted by Campbell Bird on June 1st, 2022

The release of Call of Duty: Warzone on PC and consoles renewed a lot of people’s interest in the battle royale genre. Once a red-hot game mode a couple years ago, battle royales have maintained their prominence despite finding more competition with other popular genres like autochess and more traditional multiplayer shooters, particularly on mobile.

Although you can’t play Warzone on touch screens (although maybe someday that will change), there are plenty of battle royale games you can jump into right now. Check out our five favorites below. Oh, and click here to check out all of the great lists we’ve been making recently.

The best mobile games to celebrate Star Wars Day

Posted by Campbell Bird on May 4th, 2022

Star Wars Day is coming, and if you want to celebrate appropriately, don’t shout or tweet “May the fourth be with you.” Play some Star Wars games instead. Trust me, everyone will be better served this way.

If you prefer your Star Wars gaming on the go, unfortunately, the pool of “actually good” Star Wars games is pretty slim. But, with this list of the best Star Wars games on the App Store, you can’t go wrong. Check out our picks below:

Now you could just keep on logging in to your Genshin Impacts, Rocket Leagues, and posting your daily Wordle score, but you could also be playing some games that match this romantic time of year.

Luckily, there’s plenty of solid titles to let you do exactly that. Read on below for our top picks of fully vetted and endorsed mobile games that examine love, relationships, kissing, and more.

The best mobile games like Pokémon

Posted by Campbell Bird on February 8th, 2022

The latest entry in the mega-popular monster collecting and battling series is here in the form of Pokémon Legends: Arceus. In an effort to nakedly capitalize on everyone searching for “games like Pokémon” to recommend some great mobile games, here we are with a list of games fit that exact criteria.

Whether you want just another way to play with the same pocket monsters you know and love, or want something that just takes the underlying features of collecting and battling to different places, this list has you covered with rock solid titles along with reviews to inform your choice.

The 5 Best Mobile Games like Wordle

Posted by Campbell Bird on January 4th, 2022

Wordle is seemingly taking the internet by storm as of late. The little daily “guess the word” game has been popping up all across social media timelines in the last couple of weeks, and for good reason. It’s a fun little exercise that is satisfying to complete, easy to make a daily ritual, and easy to share online to compare results.

Now, Wordle is easy enough to play on your phone as it is, but just in case you’re looking for some more games that can satisfy in a similar way between daily resets, here are some incredible mobile games that can do just that.

148Apps Game of the Year 2021

Continuing the trend begun last year, I wanted to model some Game of the Year awards through categories in addition to simply ranking my personal favorites. Between now and the dawn of 2022, I'll be updating this page regularly with new entries for each category, so make sure to check in and see what titles win which awards.

The 5 Best Mobile MOBAs

Posted by Campbell Bird on October 8th, 2021

MOBAs are a game genre that have almost everything working against them. at least on paper. They’re highly competitive and demanding multiplayer games where every player’s performance and abilities matter in determining the outcome of a match. Match lengths are pretty long, too, and if anyone rage-quits, the momentum of a match swings hard in favor of the team with more players.

All of these problems are exacerbated on mobile, where people are used to short play sessions in games they can drop in and out of. This is probably the reason why the turnover of games in this genre is so high on smaller screens. With the release of League of Legends: Wild Rift, we took a look on the App Store to find the best MOBAs that still have active communities. Check out our picks below.

The 5 Best Mobile Tower Defense Games (and an honorable mention)

Posted by Campbell Bird on August 17th, 2021

I’ll be honest here: I’m not a huge fan of conventional tower defense games. I almost always need a twist of some kind on the basic gameplay of building defensive structures and managing an economy of resources to fend off stronger and stronger enemies. Otherwise, games too often feel a little too sterile or straightforward.

This is to say that this list features only one game that most folks would unquestionably call a tower defense game. The rest are more like titles that borrow concepts and mechanics of the tower defense genre and use them to creative effect. With that in mind, check out the list below:

Kingdom Rush Vengeance TD ($4.99)

This is the conventional pick. Ironhide Studio has been consistently raising the bar on tower defense games for years, with Kingdom Rush Vengeance being their latest and most successful attempt. In it, you take control of the baddies from all the previous Kingdom Rush games to get your due against the knights and heroes that have done you wrong for so long.

The 5 Best Mobile Stealth Action Games

Posted by Campbell Bird on July 30th, 2021

Action games are a hard sell on mobile, and they get even harder if the more precision they require. Stealth games are one such subgenre that just doesn’t feel like it could work well on small touchscreens where you’re prone to being distracted or mistapping by accident.

And yet, that hasn’t stopped plenty of developers of rising to the challenge to make some great stealth action games to enjoy on iOS. Here are our five favorites below, along with links to reviews so you can learn more about them.
