So Many Holiday iOS Sales Oh My Goodness! [Updated x5]

Posted by Rob Rich on December 19th, 2014

The holiday season is in full-swing, which means a whole lot of iOS apps and games are going on sale. A bunch already have, in fact. Naturally this means we're putting together a hand-picked list of the best discounts and sales we can find in order to make your own App Store holiday shopping easier.

Things are already kicking off with an impressive assortment of great titles, and it's only going to get better as we close in on the New Year. So take a peek at what's on sale, and treat yourself a little.

[Updated - 12/20]: Holy moly there were a lot more things on sale than we expected. Over 150 entries are in the list right now, including some rather significant titles like Chaos Rings II, Where's My Water, and Deus Ex: The Fall. We've also updated the list with a devoted Apps section, and that's loaded down with some significant sales on apps like AmpliTube, Fantastical 2, and Launch Center Pro as well. The best part is we're just getting started!

[Updated - 12/22]: As expected, the list just keeps growing. A few things went back up to regular price (boo!), but way more things have gone on sale to make up for it (yay!). We're talking apps like GoodReader and The Hit List, and games like Machinarium and Infinity Blade III.

[Updated - 12/23]: Did the sales stop yet? Yeah, no, no stopping. Today's updates include big price drops on apps like Scanner Pro and Splashtop Remote Desktop. Well, the app side of things, anyway. Game sales are even more crazy, with sales on titles like Republique, XCOM: Enemy Within, and FTL just for starters.

[Updated - 12/24]: Nope, we're still not done!

[Updated - 12/26]: The holidays are over, but the sales aren't. Things have admittedly slowed down a little, however there are still some great games that we've added to the top of the list. Games like Type:Rider and Out There.

Take a look at what we've been up to this week, and find even more in our Reviews Archive.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney-Dual Destinies

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies is a direct port of the latest title in the fantastically popular Ace Attorney series. For those unfamiliar with it, the these games are courtroom dramas with a twist of absurdist humor, mostly centered around Phoenix Wright and his rise to become a star defense attorney. By Dual Destinies, the seventh title in the series, Wright and his two protégés are taking on their most exciting and intense cases yet. Each lawyer has their own “special power” that gives them the edge in court and also serves to add unique gameplay mechanics. Since Dual Destinies is a port, given the difference in screen sizes, I was worried that there would be significant loss of video quality when it was scaled up to the iPad. To my surprise, all of the animation is HD. Each cutscene is like watching an anime, and in case you can’t get enough you can always replay them from the main menu. The voice acting and music is really well done and, as with the rest of the Phoenix Wright series, the localization is top-notch. --Jessica Fisher

Vinted

Vinted is the app for vinted.com – a site that lets women post their old clothes for sale, trade, or giveaways and lets them get clothes from others at great, thrift store-ranged prices. I found it by accident, and now it’s turned into an incredible obsession. As someone who spends a lot of time browsing around thrift stores, Vinted is great for being able to do that even from bed. When I first signed up for my account, the service gave me a coupon for $10 toward anything I wanted (this coupon is given to all new users). This did NOT last long. I found dozens of tops, skirts, shoes, and all other things that were just perfect for me. In the time I’ve had it I’ve purchased 11 things, traded with one girl, and sold a few of my older/poorer fitting clothes. --Jade Walker

Godus

I’m an old hand at the Peter Molyneux hype train. I’ve seen the stories of how if you plant a seed in the Fable games, you can return later on to see a tree in its place. I remember when Black & White came out and it was meant to be the ultimate God game. It wasn’t. I’m forgiving, though. I buy every title and appreciate that, while all the promised goods won’t be there, hopefully there’ll be enough to entice me in. Godus is probably one of the most hyped iOS releases in recent times. Does it succeed at making you feel like a God? Not really. It’s quite attractive to look at and offers some much better touch-based controls than the average city/village building game, but it’s still exactly that – a typical civilization/city building simulation. --Jennifer Allen

NPR One

It’s a little too simply done, but in terms of varied radio-based content NPR One does a good job of making it easy to listen to new stories that should hopefully prove to be interesting to you. After a brief sign up process (best circumvented by connecting your Facebook details), there’s nothing particularly awkward about NPR One. You can dive straight into listening to various news clips about all sorts of subjects from politics to entertainment news, with plenty of human interest stories that teach a lot. NPR One learns as you go along in terms of what interests you via you tapping on a button to say it was your sort of thing. That makes the suggestion side of the app increasingly useful and I found it easily recommending me stories that would appeal. --Jennifer Allen

Dragon Quest IV Chapters of the Chosen

Dragon Quest IV Chapters of the Chosen is a highly revered entry in the classic Dragon Quest series. Originally released in 1990 on the Nintendo Entertainment System (and then subsequently remade for the Playstation and Nintendo DS), this update for iOS features great localization, much of the previous remakes’ bonus content, and a control scheme that is well-suited to the platform. All of these features help make Dragon Quest IV still look and play great, even for being a 24 year old game. For those that are unfamiliar, Dragon Quest is one of the most popular RPG franchises in Japan. It is developed by Square Enix, who is also responsible for the Final Fantasy series, though there are quite a few differences between the two. The most distinct difference between them is that Dragon Quest tends to be more iterative on a single, specific vision from a dedicated team of designers whereas Final Fantasy is generally a completely new game and vision centering around a few loose concepts and systems. --Campbell Bird

Rules!

Combining the need for speed with accuracy and good memory skills comes Rules!, a simple puzzle game that’s sure to test your intellectual abilities. Think Simon Says and you’re on the right track. Each level of Rules! requires you to follow a rule. Each rule is simple enough, such as tap on all the green tiles or select all of the animals. The tricky part comes in how these rules pile up. Each level adds a new rule, and you have to remember the earlier ones – up to 10 in all before the game resets. --Jennifer Allen

If you are looking for the best reviews of Android apps, just head right over to AndroidRundown. Here are just some of the reviews served up this week:

The Room

Mobile gamers rarely get to experience truly innovating games. Most of the high-quality titles are simply good at copying others. The Room is an incredible exception to that fact, as it’s the most fun and unusual quest I’ve played in several years. The subject of The Room is a series of intricate and impossibly complex locked cabinets, containing clues about a mysterious discovery the player character needs to uncover. The game quite literally revolves around these lockers. The player needs to move the camera around the locker and try to unlock all of its locks, clasps and seals by a series of actions that might just make a person go crazy. The player needs to find keys, pick combinations, scout the locker for clues – and I’m not being sarcastic when I say that it’s damn easy to get lost around the cabinet. Screenshots don’t do justice to the crazy amount of elements each locker contains, and although there are hints, I got mildly frustrated several times, trying to solve the puzzles, or trying to find what the hell I was supposed to do next. It’s not that frustrating to complete, but it’s quite a challenge. --Tony Kuzmin

Bug Heroes 2

Bug Heroes 2 is a cool mix of tactical base building tactical shooter and cockroaches. What could go wrong? Bug Heroes 2 is about bugs at war. Every slug and ant must do their part. The player moves their two bug team around in real time using an invisible virtual stick and attacking is handled automatically. Depending on which bug is picked the player might blast away at distance or close in for some melee action. During combat grunt bugs like ants with rifles and siege engine grubs are constantly produced on both sides and go about attacking enemies automatically so the battlefield is always full of some matter of six legged carnage or another. The auto produced bugs really give the game a great feel as there is always fighting going on and watching armies of bugs clash is great fun. --Allan Curtis

Gemhero

GemHero makes a terrible first impression since it forces the player to create a “Winnerconnect” account. Facebook login is also available but forcing the player into creating an account before they even get to see the game is a bit much. Then a very silly story appears featuring a knight being turned into a duck and the king assuming that killing the warlock that did it might free him. This is where the player comes in. After this an ad dialogue appears. This is before gameplay even starts. After a short tutorial, the player is given a deck that is mostly comprised of angry sheep and sheep riders, which is kind of a letdown. --Allan Curtis

And finally, this week Pocket Gamer played a new Call of Duty, ran around as a goat in Germany, told you how to survive the horrors of the Construct Quarter in Hearthstone, and decided to buy a shiny Super Smash Bros. special edition 3DS. And it's all right here.

Another Big List of iPad and iPhone Game Sales? Sure, Why Not.

Posted by Rob Rich on July 9th, 2014

It feels like we just had a big iOS game sale. Actually, we did just have a big iOS game sale. And yet here we are again, with almost 20 different games suffering from a severe case of Pricedropicitis. Or something like that.

We're not entirely sure why so many games (and so many notable ones at that) have suddenly gone on sale but here they are, on sale, ready for you to snap them up.

Seriously, there are some really great titles on this list. If you've been on the fence about downloading games like Threes! or Eliss Infinity, now's the time to fix that.

While you wait for the grill to heat up, or just waiting for the fireworks to start, you'll probably want something to keep you occupied. Fortunately a lot of iOS developers have decided to put their stuff on sale for this Fourth of July weekend.

Really it'd be a shame to let such prices go to waste, right?

7/3 - It didn't take long for a lot more games to jump on-board. We've got some stuff from 2K, Sid Meier, and more and it's still just the first day!
7/4 - Now things are really starting to get moving. Arcade classics, popular favorites - even Autumn Dynasty is getting in on the action.
7/4 Part II - The flood has slowed down a little but a healthy selection of games has been added, including Siegecraft and Tennis in the Face.

It's been five years (five Years!) Since Little White Bear Studios released TanZen onto the App Store. That's only about a month after the App Store came into being when you think about it.

To celebrate, the developer is making TanZen free for a limited time across the board. That means both versions of tangramy goodness, HD and not, are currently free to download. Even the free versions are free! Give it a look, I hear it's pretty good.

Celebrate Independence Day With These Fantastic App and Game Sales

Posted by Rob LeFebvre on July 3rd, 2013

It's Independence Day here in the US, and the App Store is getting its fair share of the party with a ton of great games and apps on sale for low, low prices. Hooray!

We'll keep this list updated as we find out more information, and as folks send us their sale plans for the Fourth of July. For now, then, here's what we've got.

Update: July 4, 9:28am Better make sure you have all of your needed grilling supplies. Lots of charcoal, various things to throw on the grill, and of course beer (aka. fuel for the cook). We've also updated our list to include a couple dozen more great app and game sales.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has put several titles on sale, dropping all of its game prices to $0.99. This includes heavy hitters like Man of Steel in both regular and HD flavors, LEGO Harry Potter Years 5-7, Batman Arkham City Lockdown, Scribblenauts Remix, LEGO Batman DC Superheroes, Midway Arcade and Bastion.

From HeroCraft, you can grab Majesty: The Northern Expansion for $0.99, instead of the regular $2.99. You can also unlock Strategy & Tactics: WWII for a low $0.99, instead of the more typical $6.99. Deep savings, indeed.

Blitz Games is coming in for some inexpensive gaming, offering nine new "Brain Box" levels to Paper Titans, a quirky little strategy puzzler that our very own Rob Rich reports his mom doesn't hate. The full game with updates is price reduced for the holiday from $2.99 to $0.99, so get it while it's cheap!

Even free apps are getting into the spirit, like This Is Not A Ball Game's sale on in-app purchases for the long weekend. In addition to a sweet new update, the game's pricing structure will change as follows, with the standard pricing for in-app purchases ($1, $3, $5, $10, $20, $50) dropping to half-off. The new promotional pricing will be $1, $2, $3, $5, $10, $25 for the same items and item packs. Note that the $1 items will not be half off, and will remain the same.

Telltale Games has reduced most all of their paid apps to $0.99. This includes the recently released Poker Night 2 and most all of their story / adventure games. Check the full list at the App Store.

And all the rest

And there are a whole bunch of other apps and games on sale to fill your Independence Day with savings. Here's a list of some of our picks.

Final Winter Sale For Many Of G5 Entertainment's Titles

Posted by Jennifer Allen on February 20th, 2013

It's nice to share the good fortune which is presumably why G5 Entertainment has decided to launch another huge sale, less than a month after its last one.

As before, many of the games are free to download with the in-app purchase price reduced accordingly. We've focused on the best of the bunch with all others listed below.

Only a mere few weeks old, Art Mogul has returned to its promotional price of $2.99 for iPhone or $4.99 for iPad. It's a great mix of Hidden Object scenes and simulation, with players taking the role of an art dealer as they aim to be the most profitable seller in all the world.

Prices Slashed On A Ton Of iOS Games In The G5 Entertainment Sale

Posted by Jennifer Allen on January 26th, 2013

One of the most prolific casual gaming publishers for iOS, G5 Entertainment, has announced a sale on many of their most popular titles. Eight different titles have had their prices reduced by up to 80%, including both iPhone and iPad games. Here's the details on what's on offer. Bear in mind, all the titles are free to download and try, with an in-app purchase unlocking the full game.

The Build-a-lot series has done a great job of turning construction into a fun time management game. Both 3 and 4 are great fun, but the latest instalment, Power Source, just about edges it for us, gaining a 4 star review when we reviewed it last year.

Build-a-lot 4: Power Source – $2.99 on iPhone & $4.99 on iPad
Build-a-lot 3: Passport to Europe - $2.99 on iPhone & $4.99 on iPad

Physics puzzler, Green Jelly is a pretty tough challenge even for experts of the genre but it'll certainly last players plenty of time. It's another esteemed 4 star game.

Green Jelly – $0.99 on iPhone & $1.99 on iPad

Point and click style adventure game, Pilot Brothers didn't gain the greatest of reviews from us, but at a reduced price, maybe it'll tantalize the puzzle tastebuds a little more this time round.

Pilot Brothers – $2.99 on iPhone & $4.99 on iPad

The Stand O'Food series has always demonstrated the chaos of serving food fast, while still offering some fun. My pick here, understandably, is the latest instalment, Stand O'Food 3 but there's still some fun to be gleaned from the earlier title.

Stand O'Food – $2.99 on iPhone & $4.99 on iPad
Stand O'Food 3 – $2.99 on iPhone & $4.99 on iPad

Want to know a fun fact? Supermarket Mania 2 was the first game I ever played on my iPad! OK, so it's not so fun, but I can confidently say Supermarket Mania 2 is. Go with that one over its older sibling, if a Time Management title is of interest in this sale.

Supermarket Mania – $2.99 on iPhone & $4.99 on iPad
Supermarket Mania 2 – $2.99 on iPhone & $4.99 on iPad

No closing date has been announced for the G5 sale, so if any of these take your fancy, I'd suggest downloading them now while the discounts are hot. Oh and don't blame me if you get hooked on Supermarket Mania 2. I did.

This Week at 148Apps: December 17-21

Posted by Chris Kirby on December 24th, 2012

'Twas the week before Christmas, and as everyone knows, Jeff Scott listed sale apps and watched that list grow: "As another year draws to a close, millions of people will find iOS devices and iTunes gift cards waiting for them under the tree. That means lots of people looking for apps and games to download and that means it’s time for a HUGE sale. This year does not disappoint with tons of apps and games on sale and a ton going free for Christmas week.

If you enjoy this list, feel free to tweet or share this post on Facebook.

Here are our picks from the best of the best apps and games on sale. And as a reminder, you can always find the latest apps and games on sale at our iOS Price Drops page."

Then away to GiggleApps we ran with a dash, and checked in with Amy Solomon, who had this news flash: "The Night Before Christmas presented by One Hundred Robots is a personal favorite retelling of the classic holiday story of the same name.

If one were to check iTunes, one could find multiple apps adapting this traditional Christmas story, and this app is a top choice of mine for a few reasons.

Although I am not always a fan of computer generated animation, especially when it boasts a 3D effect.
I do, however, love the bright, colorful and wonderfully stylized look of this computer-generated app, with interesting photographic elements and textures along with a 3D look for a very interesting visual experience. There is a wonderful use of perspective, and the placement of that would be the camera if one were shooting live action as well, as quick camera movements highlights the benefits of working with computer graphics."

Then at last we arrived at AndroidRundown, to see what was new in KickStarter-town: "Stands for smartphones are a very usual kickstarted project because they are all generally very simple and relatively cheap to make. We have done a few here for this blog post, and I was trying to stay away from them, but after seeing the crazy look of this week’s KickStarter Spotlight project I had to do it. This week I am showing off Simply Amplified’s Symphony Shells. They are 3-D printed phone stands that are shaped like real-life oceanic shells. They come in three separate forms, the urchin; small and spiked, the murex; arched and pointy, and the nautilus; square and twisting. All can be done in a very colorful and ornate tie-dye pattern or simply come in a solid or di-chromatic color scheme. My initial favorite is the nautilus simply because of its epic size and crazy spiky, square spiral. These really are very beautiful designs and any of them would display a smartphone with style and aplomb."

So rest and relax, and don't even flitter - you can always find us on Facebook and Twitter. And when you wake from your drowse and your long Christmas naps, don't forget to check in with 148Apps.
